Exhibition’s Photos

The exhibition title doesn’t require too many explanations: the photos speak for themselves.
But perhaps my choice of photos deserves an explanatory note.

In 1994, after a period of illness that lasted a few months, I was diagnosed with cancer.

“Now it is cancer’s turn to be the disease that doesn’t knock before it enters, cancer that fills the role of an illness experienced as a ruthless, secret invasion…”
Susan Sontag. Illness As Metaphor

I started an 8-month ordeal in the hospital where I was subjected to cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
My body was changing due to chemical poisons. The same poisons which helped me to kill a part of myself that wanted to live on its own, that wanted to expand and branch out in my body, that wanted to take control, destroy me and perhaps eventually to kill me.
But my will to live and not to succumb to the disease, aided by excellent doctors, made it possible for me to win the battle against cancer.
The only problem that persists in me, due to chemo and radiotherapy, is that unfortunately, I can’t have children.
For these two reasons, cancer and the inability to have children, I had the idea to become a volunteer for children with cancer and for street children.

Disease

In June 2015 I came to St. Petersburg, where I started a period of volunteer work at a cancer hospital.
During those days I took some shots that I now present in the first section of this exhibition.
The photos show children, who suddenly became men and women.
The disease turned them into “adults” in children’s bodies. The disease caused them to lose, perhaps forever, all the intermediate colours of their childhood.
This is the reason for my choice to use black and white and the use of high contrast in the photo reproduction.
The saturated blacks and whites, almost “burnt”, amplify even more the drama of that condition, and highlight once again the condition of men and women “in children’s bodies”.

Street Life
After six months spent in St. Petersburg, I departed for a trip to Asia.
I concentrated my efforts in the Philippines, where I devoted myself to the children living on the street, along the south periphery of Cebu.

In this area near the port there are shanties made of wood and metal sheets. The air is unbreathable due to the greater than 80% humidity and 35 degrees Celsius temperature.
This “heavy” air is amplified by the acrid and pungent stench rising from the streets where men and animals live together and where there are no sewers or toilets.
In the midst of this there are children of all ages. They live there day after day, month after month. Their childhood is stolen by living conditions unimaginable to most of us.

The streets are populated by multitudes of dirty, barefoot, poorly dressed and naked children, who don’t even have the comfort of running water to wash themselves.
They are unaware of how other children of the same age live in other countries. Perhaps this is fortunate, as they don’t and they cannot realize the fact that there is another condition, light years away from their childhood, to be kids.
Their games are not Barbie and balloons. They are wood and cardboard. They are wooden axle with bearings which become a scooter. They are sheets of newspaper and kindling that become kites.
They come to me smiling, laughing. They look at me now perplexed and surprised, now frightened and intimidated, now joyful and defiant. They look at me. Stretch out their hands to ask for a coin. Or they show me the middle finger in defiance because I’m invading their “territory”, because I am an alien and different. Because I am a lucky man.

Susan Sontag

MALATTIA COME METAFORA
